Lake Malawi
Known as the Lake of Stars — a name bestowed by explorer David Livingstone, who was captivated by the lanterns of local fishermen bobbing on the water at night — Lake Malawi is one of Africa’s greatest natural wonders. Stretching some 570 km in length and reaching depths of over 700 metres, this crystal-clear African Great Lake holds approximately 7% of the world’s surface freshwater. It is home to roughly 1,000 species of brilliantly coloured cichlid fish — more than any other lake on earth — making it a snorkeller’s paradise of global significance. The shores are fringed with sandy beaches, hippos, crocodiles, and the iconic cry of the African fish eagle echoing across the water.
Lilongwe Wildlife Centre
A unique 70-hectare nature reserve tucked inside Malawi’s capital city, Lilongwe Wildlife Centre is a breath of fresh air — quite literally. Run by the Lilongwe Wildlife Trust, Malawi’s leading conservation NGO, the centre features 6 km of forest hiking trails, a beautiful elevated boardwalk, a café, and a gift shop. It is open 365 days a year and every kwacha of your entry fee goes directly towards protecting Malawi’s wildlife. The centre also runs the country’s only wildlife sanctuary, offering placements in sanctuary work, veterinary medicine, and biodiversity research for those who want to get more deeply involved in conservation.
Cape Maclear & Lake Malawi National Park
At the southern tip of Lake Malawi, Cape Maclear is the jewel of the lakeshore — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the epicentre of the lake’s snorkelling and kayaking scene. The national park protects a dazzling underwater world of cichlid fish darting between boulders, while above the waterline, fish eagles soar over golden beaches fringed by granite hills. Relax in lakeside lodges, paddle out to Mumbo Island for a true off-grid wilderness.
Liwonde National Park
Malawi’s premier safari destination, Liwonde National Park hugs the banks of the Shire River in the country’s south, offering an intimate and rewarding Big Five experience in a landscape of riverine forest, grassland, and miombo woodland. Home to over 12,000 animals as of the 2024 aerial census — including elephants, hippos, endangered black rhinos, leopards, and crocodiles — the park is also a birdwatcher’s dream, with rare species such as Pel’s fishing owl and Lilian’s lovebird. Mount Mulanje
Rising dramatically from the surrounding tea estate plains to a peak of 3,002 metres, Mount Mulanje is the highest mountain in central Africa and one of the most spectacular hiking destinations on the continent. Known locally as the Island in the Sky, its sheer granite massif looms above Malawi’s southern lowlands and is often wreathed in mist. A network of mountain huts maintained by the Mountain Club of Malawi allows hikers to traverse the plateau over multiple days, passing through cedar forests, open grasslands, and past tumbling waterfalls.
